Camden Middle School seventh grade student Rylie Meagher will represent the Camden Central School District in the inaugural New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Girls’ Wrestling Invitational to be held on Friday, January 27th. The tournament will be held at SRC Arena on the campus of Onondaga Community College.
Meagher has posted an 18-2 overall record this season, which is also the inaugural season of girls’ wrestling at Camden. She will enter the tournament as the second overall seed in the 94 lb. division. She is one of 204 girls from across the state to be selected to wrestle at the invitational. Wrestling is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. with the Round of 16.
Although just a seventh grader, Rylie has a seasoned and successful past when it comes to wrestling. She was inspired by watching her brothers wrestle for several years. At the age of 8, Rylie took to the mat as part of the Sandy Creek Youth Wrestling team, and finished in second place in the youth girls’ division at the NYWAY state tournament.
Over the past few years, she has picked up knowledge from wrestling rooms around the area, including from coach Jeremy Calkins on the Camden Youth Wrestling team. Coach Calkins is now the head coach of the girls’ wrestling program.
